“A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. This may be due to the ability to damage the genome or to the disruption of cellular metabolic processes.” A chart found on the website “Cancerquest” shows a list of carcinogens and the cancers they cause.

Agent Cancer Type
Benzo [a]-pyrene (Tobacco) Lung
Alcohol Mouth, Pharynx, Larynx, Esophagus
Dietary Fat Breast
Asbestos Respiratory-tract, Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Fermented Foods Stomach
Estrogens Endometrial, Ovarian, Breast

Herpes Viruses Kaposi’s Sarcoma
Polyomaviruses (ex. JCV) Brain
HTLV-1 T-cell Leukemia
Hepatitis B and C Liver

Damages done to the body caused by carcinogens:

UVB radiation damages the genetic information within skin cells, causing specific DNA lesions or DNA photoproducts. If DNA sequence changes, whatever their cause, are left uncorrected, both growing and non growing somatic cells might accumulate so many mutations that they could no longer function. In extension the DNA in germ cells might incur too many mutations for viable offspring to be formed. The correction of DNA sequence errors in all types of cells is important for survival.

TABACCO

Nicotine is a very addictive substance found in tabacco products. The nicotine addiction level has been compared to cocaine and heroin addiction. A lack of nicotine in a active tabacco user can cause the following withdrawal symptoms:

headache, nausea, constipation, fatigue, drowsiness, insomnia, irritability, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depressed mood, increased hunger and caloric intake, increased desire for the taste of sweets.

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing compounds and 400 other toxins. These cigarette ingredients include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.

Some household chemicals found in cigarettes are listed:

Acetone – found in nail polish remover.

Acetic Acid – an ingredient in hair dye.

Ammonia – a common household cleaner.

Arsenic – used in rat poison.

Benzene – found in rubber cement.

Butane – used in lighter fluid.

Cadmium – active component in battery acid.

Carbon Monoxide – released in car exhaust fumes.

Formaldehyde – embalming fluid.

Hexamine – found in barbecue lighter fluid.

Lead – used in batteries.

Naphthalene – an ingredient in mothballs.

Methanol – a main component in rocket fuel.

Smoking is a leading cause of death from cancer. It causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, cervix, colon, and rectum.Smoking has been found to harm nearly every organ and organ system in the body and destroys a person’s overall health. Smoking causes heart disease, stroke, aortic aneurysm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease chronic bronchitis and emphysema, diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts, and worsens asthma symptoms in adults. Smokers are at higher risk of developing pneumonia, tuberculosis, and other airway infections. In addition, smoking causes inflammation and impairs immune function.

Smoking leads to disease and disability and harms nearly every organ of the body. More than 480,000 people die from tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, making it the leading cause of preventable death in this country. About 16 million Americans are living with a disease caused by smoking. For every person who dies because of smoking, at least 30 people live with a serious smoking-related illness.
